Cake at Ommegang Cooperstown NY 6/22/24

The sweltering heat and humidity on June 22, 2024 did not deter fans from flooding the grounds of Ommegang Brewery for the sold out event, eager to bask in the soothing vocals of John McCrea paired with his vibraslap, the incredible articulation and endurance of trumpet player Vince DiFiore, the perfect timing and impeccable tone of guitarist Xan McCurdy, and the epic harmony and rhythmic groove of Daniel McCallum on bass guitar.

Together, these extraordinary bandmates of the alternative rock group Cake - one of the most celebrated bands from the 90s with a devoted following to this day - combined their talents to deliver a truly unique and wonderful live performance.

They played 10 of their songs which were as followed;

  1. Sad Songs and Waltzes (Willie Nelson Cover)
  2. Opera Singer
  3. Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps (Osvaldo Farrés Cover)
  4. Long Time
  5. Rock and Roll Lifestyle
  6. Meanwhile, Rick James
  7. Frank Sinatra
  8. Sheep Go to Heaven
  9. Mexico
  10. Shadow Stabbing

After performing "Shadow Stabbing," McCrea informed their fans that the show would be on a temporary pause in order to wait out an approaching storm. Prior to a nearby lightning strike, the band was actively interacting with the audience and genuinely wanted to complete their performance. Sadly, due to apparent safety issues, the band was forced to end the performance early. They attempted to carry on with the act despite the lighting hitting down all over the venue, but it became intolerable and a huge safety concern. In an attempt to wait out the storm, Ommegang Brewery temporarily moved everyone from the property to safety while waiting for the storm to pass.

Unfortunately, mother nature had different ideas about what she wanted to do that evening and having Cake finish their magical live performance was not on her agenda. Although, a shorter set than anticipated; it was still a remarkable experience to be there and experience one of my favorite bands live. It was an honor to be able to capture and preserve the magic of their live performance for a lifetime to come. I am looking forward to the band coming back into our local area in the upcoming future so that I am able to experience the full magic that the band provides!
